The Youth of the Year program helps to shape tomorrow’s leaders by fostering character and leadership development in the young people we serve, starting them on a path to great futures.

Youth of the Year candidates compete at the local Club Level in April. Local winners then compete at the State Level the following May. If the winners advance State Level, they will attend the National Youth of the Year Celebration in Washington DC and compete for the National Title.

Their stories are remarkable.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Youth of the Year 2015

Anastasya Wilson, a sophomore at Amherst High School and 10-year member of the Eggertsville Clubhouse has been named the 2015 Western New York Youth of the Year.

Ms. Wilson, who is also our 2014 Youth of the Year, earned this honor at a banquet held in May at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Dunkirk, New York.

Each Boys & Girls Club in the Western New York area, which includes Buffalo, Chautauqua County, local suburban clubs as well as the Rochester area, may nominate one (1) youth member each year. Ms. Wilson was selected among a field of 11 highly qualified candidates.

The candidates from each club participate in an application process. The process involves essays written by the nominee, staff, teachers and peers, which highlight: positive character attributes, academic achievements, the nominee’s goals and accomplishments, life experiences and their service to others. Nominees were then interviewed by a panel of volunteer judges prior to the final selection.

This year’s judges included: Patrick Sullivan, Construction Industry Educational Foundation; Tory Irgang, United Way of Southern Chautauqua County; 2014 Collaborative Youth of the Year, Mercedes Gonzalez, and Sue McNamara, Business Professor at SUNY Fredonia.

Ms. Wilson will receive a $2,500 scholarship, funded by the Construction Industry Educational Foundation to help pursue her post-secondary education.

Ms. Wilson is planning a career in law and politics with a desire to one day become President of the United States.
