What are Supplemental Education Services?

SES provides youth with the extra help they may need to be successful in two school subjects, reading and/or math. The program is five months long and the youth participate in math, reading, and English activities through the following Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo educational programs: Skills Tutor, Kinetics City, Power Hour Pages, Math Litz, Kids Litz, Science & Math Kits, and High Yield Learning Activities.

During these programs certified teachers and tutors work with small groups and/or one on one with the youth. The small groups are arranged by the youths' educational level and need. We are fortunate to have tutors from Gear Up, Buffalo State College, Literacy Volunteers, and Daemen College volunteer their time to help our members.

At least one certified teacher is on site to oversee the entire program. This teacher will ensure all work outside of homework is following the New York State Learning Standards in each subject area. If a youth is demonstrating major difficulties with their work, the teacher will assess the activities the youth is participating in. If the teacher suspects the youth may have a learning disability, he/she will inform the Prevention Specialist of the Clubhouse. The Prevention Specialist will contact one of our partners and request a Learning Disability assessment. If the youth tests positive for a learning disability, the Prevention Specialist will make arrangements to have a specialized teacher work with the youth.
